From Vision to Reality: HPSD Sets the Standard with Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks

High Prairie School Division is proud to announce the official launch of its Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks, set to roll out across all schools this fall. These documents provide a unified, division-wide approach to how foundational literacy and numeracy skills are taught from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

This work began two years ago, when Superintendent Murray Marran laid the foundation with his vision of a common philosophical approach to literacy and numeracy instruction across the division. From the start, he emphasized the importance of building a framework that would not only guide classroom practice—but one that parents, support staff, and the broader public could easily understand and relate to.

“What was really important to me when I was working with the committees to set the course for this is that we have practical applications for teachers embedded into the documents.”
— Superintendent Marran

That vision has been realized. The finalized frameworks include clear, grade-level examples of what effective literacy and numeracy instruction looks like in practice—making them both practical and accessible to all members of the school community.

To develop these frameworks, HPSD formed two large and diverse committees consisting of 79 educators. Over the course of two years, these teams reviewed leading models from across Alberta, collaborated deeply, and tailored the final frameworks to reflect local needs, priorities, and practices.

We are especially proud that these frameworks are already being recognized across Western Canada. HPSD is currently supporting other school divisions in Alberta and Manitoba as they begin the process of developing their own.
